Question
If I were to temporarily have my cat given to a foster family until I get a big enough place for me my son and my husband, will I be able to get him back?
New York, USA
Answer
A foster agreement signed by the parties should clearly state rights and responsibilities. Doing so can help to clarify rights and responsibilities, including the right to get an animal returned, and can also be helpful if a lawsuit is commenced for a breach of the agreement (such as the failure to return the animal). Payment provisions should be included, as should provisions regarding veterinary and other care. Open-ended and ambiguous agreements (the cat will be fostered until I get a big enough place) can be difficult to enforce. What if it takes you years? What is a big enough place and who decides that? I hope that everyone involved considers the best interests of this cat who should have a loving and stable home.
