Coco (Indie Dog) was adopted two years ago by our senior colleague Himanshu Chaudhary at Petofy through an adoption camp organized by a friend and former colleague Aastha Panwar (Her NGO name is Sukoonbyaastha). Coco’s story reminds us that with courage and a smile, even the toughest storms will pass.
We sat down with Mr. Himanshu and asked some question regarding his pet parenting journey. The ups and downs of this beautiful journey and the impact it had on his life.
“I never had a pet before, and I think that’s what led me to adopt Coco,” Mr. Himanshu shared. “My first impression of her was pretty normal, just like any new pet parent would feel.”
When Coco was adopted, she was only three months old, hesitant and shy, which is completely normal for any pet adjusting to a new environment. But what really amazed me was her courage. She quickly adapted to her new home, and within no time, she became this energy-packed, chirpy, playful ball of joy. And when I say all the time, I mean all the time!”
Sir sighed a little, and it was clear how energetic and playful Coco could be. “That’s the sweet struggle of adopting a pet, trying to keep up with their boundless energy!” he chuckled.
“Well, I’ve always been an early riser, so it wasn’t much of a change when Coco started hopping around my room, eager for an early morning walk. I usually prefer my morning jogs alone, but when Coco joins me (which is most of the time), it’s always a heart-warming experience. Coco has this spontaneous energy and loves a sudden dash or sprint, anytime, any day. But if I’m being honest, I think Coco enjoys the evening walks more. The evenings are just more beautiful, in my opinion, and it’s when Coco gets to meet her fellow furry friends and all the kids along the way. They all love playing with her, and honestly, I think Coco has a bigger social circle than I do (laughs). It warms my heart to see how loved she is, and how many lives she touches along the way.”
“Coco’s love for travel is another thing that constantly amazes me. Whether it’s a small trek, exploring new mountain peaks, or discovering a new park, her enthusiasm is infectious. (Preparations for a trek can be of so much benefit, weather it is carrying the essentials or preparing for the weather change, preparing beforehand makes the trek even more worth it.) I remember this one trek I took with friends, and suddenly, Coco became the star of the group. She bonded with everyone so effortlessly, it felt like I was the one who was new to the group, and Coco was the one introducing me to all her friends. Now, every time I’m on a video call with my friends, Coco’s presence is mandatory.”
“The toughest time, without a doubt, was about a year ago when Coco was diagnosed with Parvo fever (a serious viral infection in dogs). I remember how incredibly hard those 15-18 days were, with multiple vet visits at any hour of the day. I think it was around the 7th or 8th day when Coco’s health was at its worst. But, despite the odds, she fought through it with her everlasting positivity and boundless enthusiasm. Although Parvo Virus left its mark with some lingering weakness (which eventually subsided) and a decrease in body fat (which still remains), it also brought out something incredible—courage and a zest for life—not just in her, but in me too. That’s why I named her Instagram page Coco the Courageous. She taught me what real strength and resilience look like.”
“I feel incredibly lucky because I get to experience that special moment almost every day. After a long day at work, when I come home and am greeted with such pure love and excitement, it feels magical. No matter how exhausting my day has been, how late or early I get home, or what the weather’s like, the love and joy Coco brings me when I walk through that door is indescribable. That moment makes everything worth it. It’s a feeling I will forever cherish, and it reminds me every day of how special it is to be a pet parent.”
Just Go for it! Becoming a pet parent is one of the most life-changing experiences you’ll ever have.
Adopting a pet transforms you. It makes you more compassionate, more patient, and more attuned those around you. It teaches you lessons about loyalty, responsibility, and what it means to truly care for another living being. You’ll find yourself becoming a better person, not just for your pet, but for the world around you.
I say this with my life experience itself, adopting a pet will change your life. It will not only give a loving home to an animal, but it will fill your life with a joy and purpose you never expected. Don’t hesitate, don’t doubt, adopt a pet today.
Pet parent separation anxiety is a serious issue, but in my case, I consider myself lucky. When I have to work, I leave Coco at my friend’s home, who happens to be my neighbour and a pet parent himself. Coco loves spending time with their pets, Bruno (Labrador) and Mars (Indie Cat), so she’s in great company.
For pet parents living in big cities, I think pet boarding centres can be a real lifesaver. They provide a safe, caring environment where pets can feel at ease while we’re away.
Enjoy every moment of this incredible journey of being a pet parent. Not everyone is lucky enough to experience the bond you share with your furry companion. Embrace the ups with all the joy and happiness they bring, and face the downs with patience, perseverance, and a heart full of love. Through their unconditional love and loyalty, you’ll discover what it truly means to be special.
Himanshu Sir and Coco’s pet adoption journey highlights the transformation that comes with embracing a pet into your life. It shows how doubts and hesitation can be overcome with patience, love, and care. This story will resonate with those still dreaming of becoming pet parents and will remind current pet owners of the special bond they share with their pets. It’s proof that, no matter the uncertainties, love and companionship are always worth the leap. For anyone considering adoption, remember; sometimes the best decisions come from taking that first step forward. #AdoptDon’tShop
