Animal Wellness Magazine Are retractable dog leashes safe?

Understand the risks, common injuries, and recommended safety tips before using a retractable leash for your dog.

When walking your dog, it’s important to use the right gear for safety and comfort. A lot of people opt for retractable leashes. But are retractable dog leashes safe? Read on for a comprehensive look at the problems surrounding this leash type, along with tips for safe use.

How retractable leashes work

Retractable leashes have a spring-loaded mechanism that allows the leash to extend and retract. This gives dogs freedom to explore while keeping them under control. The leash typically consists of a cord or tape you can adjust to various lengths. Some models feature a locking mechanism to set the leash at a specific length.

Retractable leashes provide convenience and flexibility for dog parents. But you must use them responsibly and with proper training to ensure safety.

A retractable leash can injure your dog

The biggest issue with retractable leashes is injury to dogs. Rope burns and cuts are common. In a New York Times article on the topic, Dr. Michael Gonzalez of the Veterinary Emergency Group in New Jersey says retractable leashes act like thin cords. They can cut or burn a dog’s neck or legs if he gets tangled in them — or even cause strangulation.

“There’s also the risk a dog can suffer…spinal injuries, such as a herniated disc,” Dr. Gonzalez adds in the article.

Too-long leash lengths can be an issue

One thing people like about retractable leashes is that you can vary their length. Some models cxtend up to 26’, which is great for training recall exercises or trail hiking.

However, increasing the distance between you and your dog can create risks if you haven’t properly trained him. The same applies if you use an extended leash length in a busy urban setting.

For example, your dog could stray into dangerous situations. These may range from negative interactions with other dogs to trotting into the middle of a busy street. An excited dog could also wrap the leash around someone else’s legs, knocking them off balance.

A 4’ to 6’ leash length offers a good balance between freedom and control. Your dog should also understand and master basic training cues so you can guide him effectively.

Other issues with retractable leashes

  • Because the handle is lightweight, you can easily drop it or lose your grip. It may break if it hits a hard surface.
  • The leash might malfunction. Retractable leashes sometimes refuse to extend or retract, or may suddenly begin to unspool on their own.
  • If you drop the handle, it can hit the ground loudly and frighten a high-strung dog. Calling him back can be an issue if the noise of the handle dragging behind him scares him even more.
  • Varied leash lengths can encourage unwanted behavior, such pulling or failing to listen to cues.
  • You could get tangled in the leash. Some strong dogs drag their people, resulting in bruises, skin abrasions, or broken bones. If the leash suddenly snaps and recoils back in your face, it could cause eye injuries.

Tips for retractable leash safety

As a veterinarian, I don’t recommend retractable leashes. But if you choose to use one, be sure to consider the following safety tips:

  1. Properly train your dog so he’s well-behaved on walks. You can avoid many retractable leash problems if your dog behaves well and remains calm. If he doesn’t pull on the leash, and learns to walk at your pace, a retractable leash become safer.
  2. Don’t attach the leash to the dog’s collar. Use a harness instead (see sidebar on page xx). Because the neck is delicate, retractable leashes can cause serious injuries, including lacerations.
  3. Maintain a 4’ to 6’ leash length you can maintain control of.

Are retractable dog leashes safe? They offer convenience and freedom, but the potential risks to dogs and their people often outweigh the benefits. This is especially true in busy or unpredictable environments. With proper training, the right equipment, and careful handling, you can minimize some dangers.

However, for most everyday walks, a standard fixed-length leash (see sidebar on page xx) paired with a well-fitted harness is a safer, more reliable choice.

Retractable leash alternatives

A fixed length leash is safer than a retractable leash, especially for urban areas. Fixed length leashes provide better control and discourage pulling.

Here are some features to look for:

  • A traffic handle (a second handle close to the dog’s harness) helps keep your dog near your side in busy environments.
  • As mentioned in the article, a leash of 4’ to 6’ in length is ideal.
  • Opt for thicker leash materials, like leather or nylon, to help prevent discomfort or injuries. Leather offers durability and water resistance, making it a strong and reliable option.

Why use a harness?

  1. A harness distributes pressure more evenly across the dog’s chest and body. This reduces strain on the neck and trachea. A harness is especially beneficial for dogs that pull or have respiratory issues.
  2. When you pair a harness with proper training, it can help discourage pulling and give you better control over your dog.

Retractable leashes sometimes refuse to extend or retract, or may suddenly begin to unspool on their own.

You can avoid many retractable leash problems if your dog behaves well.
